On August 30th, 2022, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, introduced new digital number plates in Kenya. He highlighted that these plates come with enhanced security features aimed at reducing crime and motor vehicle theft. Some notable features include a scannable hologram and a serial number linked to the vehicle’s chassis number and current owner. Additionally, the plates boast a Kenyan flag and a new font design for aesthetic appeal.
Newly imported vehicles are equipped with these plates at the port of entry upon registration. Existing vehicle owners, however, have 18 months to switch to the new plates. This mandate covers all private and government vehicles, including those used by diplomats, international organizations, motorbikes, and tuk-tuks.
This brings us to an important question: How do you apply for the new number plate in Kenya?
How to Apply for the New Number Plate in Kenya:
The application process for the new generation digital number plates is conducted through the eCitizen portal. The cost for applying is Ksh 3,050 for motor vehicles and Ksh 1,550 for motorcycles.
